TMT is a business built on firm beliefs and has been working closely with companies across the North West and beyond for the past 10+ years. Founded by Managing Director, Tom Traynor back in 2012. TMT has become one of the region’s leading commercial contracting specialists, working across a wide range of sectors, including office, rail, industrial, leisure and retail, as well as education and laboratories.

What started as a small family run business all those years ago, TMT has now grown into a multi-million-pound business, working alongside large companies such as Warner Bros, Coca-Cola, and Northen Rail. With a team of over 50 people now employed by the company, it’s clear to see that the team at TMT are critical to the ongoing success of the business. A team of specialists with knowledge and expertise from across a range of different sectors.

A large proportion of the senior leadership team at TMT is made up of women, many of whom have been with the business for a number of years. The company’s current workforce is made up of 30% being female, with a large proportion of those positions held on the company’s senior leadership team – making them the pillars of the business.

Charlie Abel is one such success story and she’s been with TMT since the very beginning. Her role now is very different from the one she held back in 2012. Charlie is a director within the business and oversees TMT’s Quantity Surveyors, Estimators, Project Managers, Site Managers as well as all of the company’s support services. Those who know Charlie, often refer to her as the ‘driving force behind TMT’.

Charlie isn’t alone in the business, as she is supported by other female colleagues working across various departments including finance – Alison Smith, procurement – Chloe Szulek, design – Siobhan Keighley, accountancy – Danielle Melling, site management – Stevie Jones and office management – Rebecca Pegg and Lauren Traynor who looks after the companies charitable and environmental trusts. Charlie comments “I’ve been with the business since day one. It’s hugely rewarding to see so many female colleagues joining me in critical roles across the business to drive TMT forward. Even in this day and age it is still fairly unheard of to have so many females working within a traditionally male orientated sector. We’re proud to be able to change the misconceptions many people still have around females working in the construction sector. Our approach has always been to recruit, develop and retain our colleagues and this is certainly true of the women we have across our business”.

As a whole sector 2023 has been a positive year for women working in construction, with figures showing an increase of 1.2% on the number of females working in the sector, as opposed to numbers reported pre-pandemic. Charlie Abel adds “We’re proud to be able to change the misconceptions many people still have around females working in the construction sector. Our approach has always been to recruit, develop and retain our colleagues and this is certainly true of the women we have across our business. The construction sector had previously built barriers for women to work in construction; however, this now seems to be changing for the better. I’m hugely proud that TMT has built a team of strong women who break down those barriers on a daily basis.”

Over the last ten years, the diversity of TMT’s workforce has changed, and this has helped them build a proven track record of delivering complex commercial projects across the UK.

Something else TMT are passionate about is their ability as a company to give something back. Most recently they have established two trusts, one which will look after charitable initiatives and another which will focus on environment and sustainability projects.

Previously TMT had always ‘given back’ to those communities and projects close to their hearts. Their newly established charitable and environmental trusts will ensure they continue to work closely with clients and partners to help support causes important to them.

Lauren Traynor will be tasked with overseeing the running of the trusts, with TMT putting a percentage of their annual profits into the trusts each year to aid the support of future projects. Lauren comments “TMT has always been strong supporters of raising much-needed funds to support both charitable and environmental causes.

We have chosen to formalise the two trusts, bringing them together to continue to support our clients and partners by giving back to those communities, charities and environmental projects in which we work”.

Over the past 10 years TMT has worked alongside numerous charitable and environmental causes to raise vital money, donations and dedicate volunteering time to projects as part of their ongoing commitment to social value.
